日月潭是台灣著名的風景區，是台灣八景中的絕勝，也是台灣島上唯一的天然湖泊，其天然風姿可與杭州西湖媲美。湖面海拔740米，面積7.73平方公里，湖周長35公里，平均水深40米。潭中有一小島名珠仔嶼，亦名珠仔山，海拔745米。以此島為界，北半湖形狀如圓日，南半湖形狀如一彎新月，日月潭因此而得名。
日月潭本來是兩個單獨的湖泊，後來因為發電需要，在下游築壩，水位上升，兩湖就連為一體了。潭中有一個小島，遠看好像浮在水面上的一顆珠子，故名珠仔島，現在叫光華島。以此島為界，北半湖形如日輪，南半狀似上弦之月，因名日月潭。舊台灣八景之一的「雙潭秋月」就是由此而來。
日月潭之美在於環湖重巒疊峰，湖面遼闊，潭水澄澈；一年四季，晨昏景色各有不同。七月平均氣溫不高於攝氏二十二度，一月不低於攝氏十五度，夏季清爽宜人，為避暑勝地。
潭東的水社大山高逾二千公尺，朝霞暮靄，山峰倒影，風光旖旎。潭北山腰有一座文武廟，自廟前遠眺，潭內景色，盡收眼底。南面青龍山，地勢險峻，山麓中有幾座寺廟，其中玄奘寺供奉唐代高僧唐玄奘的靈骨。西畔有一座孔雀園，養有數十對孔雀，能表演開屏、跳舞，使人倍添遊興。東南的邵族居民聚落，有專供旅客觀賞的民族歌舞表演。泛舟遊湖，在輕紗般的薄霧中飄來蕩去，優雅寧靜，別具一番情趣。
